Let The Man Teach!

Isn’t it old yet? You know, being homophobic? Acting like gay people are this new, strange creation that hasn’t been around since the dawn of mankind? At St. Lucy’s Priory High School in Glendora, CA, now former teacher Ken Bencomo has been relieved of his duties after a story of his wedding to his partner and now husband Christopher Persky were published in a newspaper.

Bencomo has worked for the school for 17 years and many are saying that his sexuality has been known for quite some time. This has not been a secret he has kept from the staff. I doubt he would walk into the break room talking about all the gay sex he just had the previous night like how some straight people do and you know who you are. It just didn’t become an issue until it became very public. Hmm. Doesn’t that sound familiar?

The U.S Supreme Court now allows same sex couples to get married here in California and they did what was their legal right to do. Obviously he didn’t think he was wrong in doing so.

This is what is so hard for me to wrap my head around. Being religious and gay. He taught at this Catholic school for girls for damn near two decades only to be fired for being who he is. There are teachers that beat, molest, sleep with, and just plain old don’t teach students and they just get shuffled to another school or sit collecting paychecks. This guy was fired for marrying who he loved. Figure that nonsense out. Students have been protesting at the school saying that he should be rehired because he is a beloved teacher and participated in activities at the school which released this statement.

“While the school does not discriminate against teachers or other school employees based on their private lifestyle choices, public displays of behavior that are directly contrary to church teachings are inconsistent with these values. These values are incorporated into the contractual obligations of each of our instructors and other employees.”

So be gay…but keep quiet about it.

Kinda like how gays have had to for all these years. I know at some schools they have students sign contracts. A while back there was that one student that played college football that was expelled because he had sex. That, as silly as it seems, is something I get. He signed that saying he wouldn’t get his freak on and did. This teacher was contractually obligated to not be gay.

Did they really want him to hide his love? To pretend that he was not happy that he could finally do what straight couples have been doing their whole lives? I cant imagine teaching for a system that says that who I am will burn in hell for being born a certain way. To say that your system does not discriminate based on their private lifestyles until it becomes public sounds way too much like how the church handles priests that do a lot of bad things privately and don’t take care of situations until they become public. Even if Bencomo does get his job back, which I doubt will happen, they will quickly find another reason to let him go. This whole thing makes no sense to me.
